Just found the site from looking at the Orcadian Online.
Although born and bred a Southerner, spent many, many very happy holidays as a child staying with relations in Orkney.
Have been fascinated by the block ships, Royal Oak, Churchill Barriers and derelict emplacements ever since.
Hope to return in 2011 - Also hope there\'ll be some ODIN activities going on take part in/listen to etc.
Would appreciate any info about bombing of Orkney during WW2 and what fighters were scrambled, and where from, to intercept them.
Good luck with the site.
Cheers,
Gary

Hi Gary,

Good to hear from you. You\'ve asked the right questions at the right time he he. Im a postgrad specialising in Battlefield Archaeology and specifically Orkney stuff, reinterpreting the air conflict over Scapa Flow between September 1939 and April 1940 as an early Battle of Britain.

May I recommend you take a look at \'Luftwaffe over Scotland\' by Les Taylor. It has a good wee introduction to the engagements between the Lufwaffe and the RAF over Orkney. 43 & 111 Hurricane Squadrons operated out of Wick during the Battle of Orkney and scored some of the initial success of WWII and many of the Aces of the Battle of Britain sharpened their teeth over Orkney. We owe a lot of the success of the BofB to the Orkney campaign.
